Flora and Fauna of San Roque

San Roque has only 27 hectares of protected natural areas these comprising the Guadiaro River Estuary’s Natural Reserve. The mouth of the river is a fine example of backwater flow, in addition to a dense riverside forest forming a sand bar which joins it to the sea. It is an area of high environmental value, both in terms of the beauty of its landscape and its variety of flora: cat tail (Tipha sp.), reeds (Phragmites australis), torpedo grass (Panicum repens), rushes (Juncus acutus) and tamarisk (Tamarix sp.); and fauna such as: coots (Fulica atra), moorhens (Gallinula chloropus), little grebes (Tachybaptus ruficollis), kingfishers (Alcedo atthis), egrets (Egretta garcetta), gulls (Larus argentatus), grey herons (Ardea cinerea) and gadwalls (Anas strepera), in addition to sandpipers such as snowy plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus), dunlins (Calidris alpina) and snipes (Gallinago gallinago).
