Symbolic Areas in San Roque |
Its cliffs and beaches with their views of the North African coast and the Straits of Gibraltar constitute an ideal destination for sports lovers. In addition, the area offers excellent facilities for golfing practise.
Near Guadarranque one finds the splendid ruins of the Roman City of Carteia, providing a stark contrast to the industrial landscape which surrounds them.
The walking routes through the mouth of the river Guadiaro and along the coast are highly recommended, such as that which runs between the mountain ranges of Carbonera and Arca and which make up the coastal reliefs of Punta Mala. It is a folding structure facing the coastline, from where the original woodland which covered it has disappeared leaving only a few isolated samples among a dense thicket of kermes oaks and intercalated meadows. There we can find fauna such as badgers (Meles meles), foxes (Vulpes vulpes), partridges (Alectoris rufa), great grey shrikes (Lanius excubitor), blackbirds (Turdus merula), Sardinian warblers (Sylvia melanocephala), Montpellier snakes (Malpolon monspessulantis) ladder snakes (Elaphe scalaris), black redstarts (Phoenicurus ochruros), etc.
There is a Nature Workshop in the Pinar del Rey Peri-Urban Park.
