Introduction to San Roque |
Located on a natural vantage point, over the valley of the la Colmena and la Alegría brooks. It offers an extremely rough municipal territory due to the mountain ranges of Almenara, Arca and Carbonera the most recent rock formations of the subbetic system and which enter the sea with the Rock of Gibraltar. The area also boasts the Pinar del Rey (360 hectares.), the “lungs of the area” inherited from the Catholic Kings. Its origins are found in Carteia (Roman ruins in Guadarranque), and Barbésula. It occupies a surface area of 140 square kms, and its geographical location is Interior –Arco Bay- Mediterranean Coast - Altitude: 109 m.
San Roque is situated in an invaluable climatological region, with mild, almost inexistent winters and warm summers. Highlighted for its generally excellent atmospheric conditions, with more than 3000 hours of sunlight per year, which places the area within the sunniest regions in the Peninsula. The average temperature ranges between 18º and 20º C.

It originated from the loss of Gibraltar in 1704, when the inhabitants of the main square rejected the continuing occupation of the British in that area, and moved to the old San Roque Hermitage.
It has a population of 23,981 inhabitants distributed over various nuclei:
-Campamento, residential.
-Puente Mayorga and Guadarranque, marine based.
-Torreguadiaro, Pueblo Nuevo, San Enrique and Guadiaro, tourist based.
-Taraguilla and La Estación are two communication hubs served by the railway station, the entrance onto the Ronda road and the mountain range around Cadiz.
The old quarter of San Roque with its steep streets, its houses with their grilled windows and balconies, and its patios and white façades has been declared a Historical-Artistic Monument, and conserves its profoundly Andalusian physiognomy. The classical Andalusian patios belong to the mansions of noblemen constructed at the beginning of the 18th Century. Plants, majestic columns, wells and colour.
La Alameda is the traditional walkway for natives of San Roque. The “Juan Luis Galiardo” Theatre-Cinema is located there.
