Fauna and Flora of Jimena de la Frontera |
Almost two thirds of its area belongs to the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, where the large majority of the landscape is characterised by the species which gives it its name: groups of large, leafy cork oaks (Quercus suber) which occupy the mountain ranges in addition to the Portuguese and Algerian oaks (Quercus faginea y Quercus canariensis), olives (Olea europaea), strawberry trees, (Arbutus unedo), heaths (Erica arborea), oleanders (Nerium oleander) and alders (Alnus glutinosa).
The fauna is characterised by griffin vultures (Gyps fulvus), short-toed eagles (Circaetus gallicus), Bonelli’s eagles (Hieraetus fascinatus) booted eagles (Hieraetus pennatus) and peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus), in additions to ravens (Cervus elaphus), foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and common genets (Genetta genetta).
The South-West area of the municipality also within the boundaries of the Natural Park is flat and used as a grazing area. Numerous birds such as herons, rooks, eagles and vultures frequent the area.
The South-East area, outside the Park’s boundaries, is composed of a group of peaks which transport the waters from the brooks which will later flow into the Guadarranque River.
