Geography of Jimena de la Frontera

Jimena’s municipal territory is the northernmost zone of the region of Gibraltar. Its territory does not touch the sea, its only point of access being the Guadiaro River; which together with the Guadarranque, which rises in the South-East of the area and the Hozgarganta form the municipality’s hydrographical network in addition to their numerous low volume tributaries.

Geologically speaking the area belongs to the Gibraltar Complex. These zones composed of Cretacian and Early Miocene limestone and sandstone were deposited in oceanic and post-oceanic environments, folded, raised and transported during the Quaternary and Alpine Orogeny periods.
