The most popular of the water sports are submarine fishing and windsurf which take advantage of the Strait’s unique wind network, which results in Tarifa being the chosen destination for numerous competitions bringing together followers from all over the world.
It is recommended to visit one of the many sites offering beautiful panoramic views of the Strait and the coast of Africa as is the case in the Fates Mountain Range.
In addition to the various routes offered by the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, one may choose to tour the Bolonia Inlet. This natural area with its rich landscapes and little urbanisation offers three differentiated ecosystems.
On the one hand the virginal beach where the vegetation actually touches the sand and where one can find species well adapted to this environment such as beachgrass (Ammophila arenaria), silver sea stock (Malcolmia littorea), sea daffodils (Pancratium maritimum) and seaside eryngo (Eryngium maritimum). On the other a forest of small, stubby pine trees accompanied by an understory of retama, kermes oaks and juncos. And finally a gigantic dune of more than 30 metres in height occupied solely by beachgrass.
In terms of the fauna and the range of migratory birds which cross the Strait one can find hoopoes (Upupa epops), cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis), stonechats (Saxicola torquata) and Montagu’s harriers (Circus pygargus).
Along the same route one can visit the archaeological site of Baelo Claudia, which hosts the remains of a Roman city dedicated to the salting industry and the manufacture of the famous “garum”.
